is defined as "socially correct behavior," and rules for
etiquette
apply to social relationships on the internet as much as any where
else. Internet
dating
has its own set of social conventions. Here are some of the more common
rules of
internet dating
etiquette.

Post an honest profile. Of
course, you want to present yourself well, but it is important to be honest in
your
internet dating
profile. This is the only information the other person has about you, and
it is good
etiquette
to be honest. That means posting a current picture of yourself, not one that is
ten years younger and thirty pounds lighter. It means telling the truth
about your age, education, profession, and all other information. Remember
that you will meet these people eventually, and any dishonesty will
become abundantly clear with time. If you are looking for a meaningful
long-term relationship, then you will certainly want to start it off on a
positive and truthful note.
Honest
doesn't mean intimate, though. Save the details of your previous
relationships or your terrible childhood for another time and place. Don't
divulge too much too soon; get to know one another first.

Be nice. It's good
etiquette
to be polite, respectful and courteous in all emails and other
communications. Don't make racial or ethnic slurs or jokes. Don't put
people down. Don't be rude or crass. Good manners don't change with
internet dating.

Safety first. For both you and
the other person. Don't push the other person into uncomfortable
conversations, and don't allow yourself to be pushed there,
either. Respect the other person's need for safety. Internet
dating
can feel risky to some, and you need to allow the other person proceed at his
or her own pace.

No profanity. Most
internet dating
sites don't allow profanity, and you can be blocked by the person you are
interested in if you use foul language. Some sites will even delete
you.

Don't use sexual innuendos or sexual talk.Discussing
sex, making sexual comments, or making sexual innuendos is usually unwelcome
early in a relationship, especially to women. Again, you could be blocked
or deleted on most
internet dating
sites for unwelcome sexual talk.

No response means no interest. With
internet dating, when
you are interested in someone, you email him or her and let them know you'd
like to know him or her a bit better. If you don't get a response, that
means they are not interested. People are not obligated to respond to
initial emails. Respect the boundaries of others, and don't push it.

Don't quit responding. If you
have been communicating with someone, and it becomes apparent to you that you
aren't interested in pursuing a relationship with him or her, it's good
internet dating
etiquette
to send a polite email letting them know. You don't have to detail why you
don't want to pursue the relationship, just let them know that you don't think
you're a good match. If you just stop communicating, the other person
doesn't know if the relationship is over or not.
Etiquette
in the cyber world is very similar to
etiquette
in the physical world. It all comes down to being thoughtful, courteous
and respectful. Internet dating etiquette comes down to treating others
like you want to be treated.
